Superb.
Ex S. Weintraub collection and Nelson Bunker Hunt, Sothebys New York
(19.06.1990) and Leu 10 (1974), 84.
The legend R - XL reducta quadragesima Galliarum,
celebrating Galbas repeal of the 2 1/2 percent tax on goods enteriing
Gaul in appreciation of the help which Gaul and Spain had lent him.
According to Suetonius (Suetonius Vespasian., 16), that very tax was
reimposed by Vespasian shortly thereafter. The statue which Roma holds
has been variously described by the major references: RIC calls it
Victory, which it cannot be, since the statue has no wings and is
holding no wreath; ACG and BN identify the statue as Pax, but Pax is not
usually portrayed standing on a globe and typically holds an olive
branch and scepter; BMCRE and Cohen identify the statue as Fortuna,
which makes the most sense, since Fortuna commonly holds a cornucopia
and is depicted in the presence of a globe. |

BN III, cf. 63, 267 (similar, very close obv., rev. with HISPANIA) and

Unique and unpublished (?).
Good very fine
The style of the obv. recalls the very rare and
interesting issues of the usurper Clodius Macer (April-October AD 68),
cf. K. V. Hewitt, The Coinage of L. Clodius Macer, NC 1983. Clodius
Macer was propraetor in Africa under Nero and revolted against the
emperor in early 68. But he did not support Galba who defeated Nero at
the same time in Spain. Macer was killed by Trebonius Garutianus under
orders of Galba. Another detail is similar on both issues: with the
abbreviation SC, both rebels did subordinate themselves to the Senate.
