FDC, Very rare. Exceptional.
This magnificent and extremely rare denarius is
from a small group of coins struck in Gaul after Galba's salutation as
imperator on 2 April AD 68. As later issues from the same mint have his
title augustus and follow the development of his titulature in Rome, it
is likely that this particular coin is from an issue prior to his
official assumption of the title in mid-June AD 68. |

Very rare. A beautiful portrait in high style. Good very fine
Ex NAC sale 9, 1996, 830. Two of Galba's coins that
clearly communicate his desire to repair Rome of the moral degradation
it had suffered since the death of Augustus are represented with this
lot and the one following. With Nero's death representing the end of the
Julio-Claudian dynasty, Galba took the helm at a critical moment in
history: all of Rome's emperors thus far had been Julio-Claudians, and
Galba's principate was a turning point. It was also a turning point
because at no other time had an emperor been hailed in the provinces -
it had always occurred in Rome or its environs. On the aureus of lot 42
Galba announces Roma Renascens - 'Rome rising again', or 'Rome reborn',
and on this aureus he announces Salus Generis Humani, proclaiming he
will attend to the welfare of all mankind. However noble Galba's
intentions, he was terribly naïve to think that radical reform of moral
and social conduct could be achieved in short order, and especially
under such chaotic circumstances. He removed incompetent men from their
offices and replaced them with more qualified candidates, and was stern
- even stingy - with his army. Tacitus reports he did not provide even a
"mere token act of generosity" for his soldiers, which assured his
downfall only six months into his reign.

Ex Sotheby’s 1979, P.A. Doheny, 89 and Sotheby’s 4 December 1990, Hunt
part III, 72 sales. From the Jameson collection.
Almost more remarkable than Galba’s legacy as an
emperor for seven months in 68 and 69 is the life he enjoyed before he
claimed the purple. He was among the wealthiest men in the empire, and
is said not to have travelled anywhere, not even on a casual afternoon
ride, with less than ten thousand gold pieces. Being so wealthy and
belonging to a noble family, the Suplicii, it is not surprising that he
held many important posts in Rome and in the provinces, and was a
personal acquaintance of the Julio-Claudians. Galba began his
association with the Julio-Claudians with a pinch on the cheek from
Augustus when he was a child, and thereafter he was a personal
acquaintance of the emperors from Tiberius to Nero, whom he overthrew in
68. Agrippina Junior was apparently infatuated with him, and he enjoyed
especially close friendships with Claudius and Livia. Suetonius tells us
Livia made Galba her principal heir, leaving him 500,000 aurei, but that
Tiberius nullified her bequest on a technicality, reducing the amount to
only 5,000. |
