The bearded and bound Gaulish captive seated below the trophy on this coin has long been identified as Vercingetorix, the chief of the Arverni, captured by Caesar at Alesia in 52. Both Crawford and Sear dismiss this identification as unlikely, but the clearly individual features, emphasized by the unusually large size of the captive’s head, make it likely that the die cutter was attempting to produce a recognizable portrait of an actual individual. |

Caesar was in Greece and the East when this aureus was struck in the year beginning October, 48 B.C. Initially he was in Egypt sharing time with Cleopatra in Egypt, then he moved through Syria and Asia Minor en route to wage a quick and successful war against Pharnaces II, king of the Bosporus. His victory over Pharnaces at Zela in August, 47 B.C. is likely the occasion represented on this coin by the
wreath. Considering his recent campaign against Pompey and his long absence from Italy, a reminder that his authority was based in venerable Roman institutions might have been recommended at this stage of his rise to supremacy. The inscriptions describe him as having held the dictatorship for the second time and the designs indicate his role as chief priest (pontifex maximus) of the Romans and his membership in the college of augurs. |

L. Valerius Asisculus. Circa 45 BC.
AR Denarius (3.27 gm). Laureate head of Zeus right, pickax (acisculus) and
ACISCVLVS behind, all in laurel-wreath / Anguipede Giant facing, grasping Jupiter's thunderbolt which has struck his flank, and raising hand in agony, L VALERIVS in exergue. Crawford 474/4 (same dies); CRI 93; Sydenham 1003; Valeria 21. VF, scattered porosity, recently cleaned. Nonetheless, one of the rarest of Roman Republican denarii, valued at
£1300 in Roman Silver Coins. ($4000) The head of Zeus within laurel wreath and the vanquished Giant are clear
references to a glorious victory, which can only be that of Caesar over his
enemies. Sear suggests this association of Caesar with godhead was another
irritant to those factions opposing him, and may have lead to the quick demise
of this coin type. |

Crawford 480/16; CRI 111 (same obverse die); Sydenham 1067; RSC 9 (same obverse die). Toned, near VF, obverse die cracks, porous. Gaius Cossutius Maridianus was the fourth member of the short-lived
quattuorviri monetales. Shortly before Caesar's assassination, the Senate, under pressure from Caesar, acquiesced and decreed that the dictator's portrait should be allowed to appear as an obverse type on denarii, and that the number of moneyers be increased to four. For the first time in Roman history, the image of a living individual appeared on the coinage of the Republic. It was Caesar's undiplomatic wielding of power and image makeover during these last few months which led to his assassination on 15 March. |

Ex Münzhandlung Basel Caius Antonius, the younger brother of triumvir Marcus Antonius was appointed proconsul of Macedonia in 44. The decision was revoked in favour of M. Iunius Brutus. Caius Antonius, however, moved towards Macedonia and was besieged by Brutus already in Apollonia and captured after the city’s fall in 43. In the beginning of the following year he was put to death in retribution for the murder of the famous Cicero who had been proscribed by the triumvirate. The priestly implements allude to the office of Pontifex that he held since 44. The obverse is in reference to the proconsulship of Macedonia that he never
attained. |

Regulus. 42 BC. AR Denarius (3.86 gm). Laureate head right between laurel branch and caduceus / Bull charging right. Crawford 494/24; CRI 115; Sydenham 1106; RSC 27. Toned, superb EF. Exceptional centering and strike. Sear suggests that this moneyer is the son of the praetor of the same name who
served under Caesar in the African War. It has been proposed that the symbolism
behind the laurel branch and caduceus on either side of Caesar's head relate to
the peace and prosperity Caesar had hoped to restore to the Roman world by
victories over enemies of the state before he was murdered by Brutus. It also
relates to propaganda the Triumvirs were promoting as they prepared to confront
the leaders of the assasination plot against Caesar. |

shown with the title Pontif Maximus, an office which he received after the
assassination of Julius Caesar and held until his death in 12 BC. |
